SAMMA 2018: Top-5 results from public polls

Written by on February 16, 2019

Johannesburg, South Africa: the top-5 nominations for the 2018 South African Metal Music Awards have been concluded. The awards seek to acknowledge and celebrate achievements by SA bands within the year of 2017.

The process began in January with seven panelists from different parts of South Africa each submitted a list of five nominations per category, giving rise to a number of long lists. In March, these lists were put to the public where a vote determined the top-5 choices in each category. The task now goes back to the panel to assess what the public has returned to them, and to determine via a democratic process a recipient for an award in each category. (More detail on the SAMMA process here)

A few voluntary exclusions

For the record, we have to state that three nominees who were successful in the public voting requested to be removed from the awards. Each was contacted by www.metal4africa.com as the Independent Observer to formally verify these requests. In respect of those nominees wishes to be removed, they shall not be named.

The poll scores moved each of the existing top-5’s into a higher position, and the 6th highest score allowed into the top-5 where these instances occurred.
